And right there, he heard his phone buzz across the room.
At first he actually thought it was his imagination, since the only person who called him was his mother and he wasn't sure that even if the world was literally ending she would be awake past 10pm.
When he looked at the screen, he literally couldn't believe it.
A mix of emotions came to his body so suddenly that he froze. But not for too long. He actually wanted to answer the call. Although he was hesitant at first, he pressed the green button.
The name Frances was the only thing in the world that would made him go against all his wills.

"You’re usually really… festive,” Charles told Edwin. “On Christmas Eve. But today it’s like, more of the same as every day, and… I don’t know.” He shrugged. “Just feels off, is all.”
“I promise you that I am perfectly fine.” Edwin’s voice was final, and he turned a page as though punctuating what he’d said.
“Well, okay then.” Charles knew better than to argue. “Just know you can talk to me, yeah?”
It was silent for a few minutes, quiet and simple as Charles chose his Bomberman level and began to choose his power-ups. But then Edwin cleared his throat, and Charles looked up just as the Game Boy told him to START.
“My mother used to make plum pudding at Christmas each year.”

It is three full days before Edwin realizes that there is a third person in the house. Until then, there is not so much as a hint as to the additional presence.
It comes as a surprise: a quiet knock, as though someone is at the front door.
The sound does not emanate from the entryway, however; it comes from somewhere else entirely, just off the hallway, at the top of the stairs that Edwin has presumed leads down to the cellar.
There is a pause, and then the knock comes again, quite faint. A voice follows it, just as soft: "Mum? Dad?"
