The thing about watching the breath leaving a body and knowing that it was your fault is that that moment never leaves you. Through nightmares, through flashbacks, through slots in the fabric of reality where time spills over and soaks into the soles of your feet. It didn’t matter how you justified it, in the end—murder was murder, and the tang of death never truly leaves your tongue.
Still, he couldn’t make himself regret killing. Were he to slip through one of those time slots and find himself in a position to start over again, he would not change the choices he had made.

It was a short list, culled over the years to the most important things. Before, they used to think they’d kill themselves before they were 18, but then the assistant head coach of the Exy team at Penn had recruited them. They decided to move the goalpost, deciding they would at least try and learn as much as they could about everything before they offed themselves in four years.
