Summary

Her sister is dead.
Peter is Spider-Man.
Both facts feel impossible yet both are somehow true.
Peter left to find MJ, but Gayle knows what awaits down that path. MJ is never coming home again. He’ll have to accept that soon enough, and then what?
Gayle didn’t have a choice when the courts wouldn’t let her live with her grandmother after the Snap. When they wouldn’t let her stay with the one person still alive who actually cared for her instead of her neglectful drunk of a dad.
People don’t ever change, not fundamentally. Peter has always been unreliable, lazy, evasive. Gayle never witnessed a moment of peace for MJ in loving a man so very much like their father, and now she knows it’s even worse: Peter’s dangerous.
Gayle can’t let what happened to her happen to Thea. She can’t let a stolen childhood be her niece’s fate.
She can’t, so she won’t.
Her hands are steady when she picks up her cell phone, but this time it’s not to frantically try to reach Peter. This time it’s a text to her boss.
I need the name of a good custody lawyer.

Summary
Being dead, as it happens, is a frustratingly useless affair. Being a spirit that refuses to leave your nephew all alone in the world and who as a result, is losing all memory of your human life piece by piece? Definitely moves things into the “fucking abysmal” category of existence.
So when Death offers the ghost of May Parker a part-time job that will conveniently give her a little more time to figure out how to help Peter get his life back in order, it’s hard to think of a good reason to say no.
Or: In which May’s days still involve a lot of cooler chats, just not quite of the water variety.

Summary
The city is unusually quiet tonight. Oh, sure, he’s had his usual crimes: muggings, drug deals, a few break ins. Nothing special. Nothing that could possibly explain the thread of tension winding through him, slowly tightening like a noose. Ever since last night, his spidey senses have set off at a low, maddening hum, distracting him, needling him, filling him with a restless energy that’s robbed him of restful sleep. He’s used to dealing with his super powered anxiety, but this feels different somehow. More ominous. And what’s weirder is that other people seem to be a little more wary, a little more on edge than usual, too. Cops, firefighters, even one of the guys Peter caught snatching a purse commented on it from his web cocoon on a street light.
“You feel that, Spidey? The city’s all weird tonight. Feels like the whole place is holding its breath, waiting on something.”

“Well, you know what we could always do,” Ned says with another head tilt, holding his drink with both hands.
“Dare him to do it in front of Flash?” She asks with a smirk, Ned laughing as they both look over to the two of them– still deep in their argument, Michelle laughing to herself from how animated Peter was getting about it.
“Or just finally make him put up or shut up,” Michelle says, shrugging as she brings her drink to her lips.
“Think he’s just avoiding it now on purpose,” Ned jokes.
Her eyes are on Peter, catching him as he glances over to her and smiles– winking once more before he goes back to arguing with Flash, a confirmation that he not only could hear what her and Ned were talking about but was absolutely doing it on purpose.
Michelle smirks, a plan formulating in her mind.

He’s walking down the street, giddy and light and full from what ended up being a much better day than he thought it would be– only for all that good to come crashing down when his phone buzzes again, glancing down to it and freezing in place.
It’s a news alert, one of the many that he had rigged for his phone– a constant for not only working at SI, for being an engaged citizen, and for being best friends with a guy who wore spandex and sneaked off into the night.
There’s a hollow feeling in his chest, tunnel vision that prevents him from seeing how many people pause in the street too– something that’s only happened a few times in New York before.
If he was present, he'd see the way people bring their phones up to their face. If he was in his body, he'd recognize how shocked and scared they all look.
Something big has happened.
Something is wrong.
