Charlie laughed through his nose and hummed deep in his throat.
“Yeah…” he paused. Nick put toothpaste on his toothbrush.
“I’m just feeling a bit…” There was a longer pause.
“A bit what?” Nick said, speaking with a mouth full of toothpaste. He spit and went to put the brush back in his mouth when Charlie replied.

Summary
Nick’s never really been on a “cut” before. Naturally, he’s done enough research on it and his tiktok feed tends to be rife with gym bros caught in bulk/cut cycles. He knows enough about cutting to understand that he’s not exactly excited that Noah, his captain, decided it’d be a good idea for the whole team to cut their caloric intake right before finals. Really, it’s absurd.
But nobody else complains, so Nick doesn’t either. It’s his first year on the team and he really doesn’t want to get on anyone’s bad side by bringing up the rate of eating disorders among male athletes; information Nick only has because Charlie relayed it to him while he was in his treatment program. His mind is a sea of random mental health facts now. Not that he minds, of course. He figures it’s better to be educated about these things than totally ignorant.
Besides, if one of the lads starts displaying symptoms, Nick is totally prepared to step in and handle things before it gets out of hand.

Summary
The rumors started right away.
Nick wasn’t really surprised by it. Charlie was pretty well known throughout the school and his absence would be noticed. Or maybe it was because Nick looked like a kicked puppy throughout the entire school day.
Either way, he first heard some people chatting about it outside class, their whispering voices traveling down the hallway.
“I bet it’s mono,” a guy whose name Nick did not even know said with a snicker.
“But his boyfriend is still here,” the other, whom Nick was sure was named Greg, responded.
“Unless he cheated on him! He does look really sad lately.”
The first few days were the hardest, knowing that Charlie wouldn’t be coming in behind him, or grabbing Nick in the hallway to kiss in an empty classroom. To know he couldn’t lean to the right to whisper something, a joke or an observation. To know he wouldn’t see Charlie’s bright eyes and smile walking past him on the way to another class, just a moment, but one Nick treasured with his entire heart.
