Summary
“You’ve been running a long time, haven’t you? You don’t need to run anymore.”
Charles tried to shake the cotton from his thoughts, but Death was looking at him with the kindest eyes he had ever seen in his life or death. “Um – what about Edwin? You can’t split us up,” was all his mind could grab hold of.
“The ones we share a great love with never truly leave us. There are bonds that even Death cannot break.” She smiled softly again.
Charles felt comforted by that. Edwin would never truly leave him. “That’s – good,” he managed to say. He was feeling pretty peaceful about the whole thing, actually.
“Are you ready to find out what’s next?” Death asked as she extended her hand to him, palm up and welcoming.
Charles looked at Death, with her exceedingly kind eyes and her overwhelmingly tender smile, and her hand an invitation that he could not refuse.
He reached out and took it.
And Charles Rowland passed on to his afterlife.

Summary
Alone was how Edwin learnt to operate. He pushed down the desires he felt for friendship, and for someone to accept him. He survived alone, with his whole world contained in his mind. He survived school and he survived hell. He was a good man, he was intelligent, and he was self-sufficient. He might be too much for other people, he might make them flinch as if he was scolding water. But he was enough; and he could handle the heat of his own intensity. That was, until he met Charles. Meeting Charles after not interacting with anyone for seventy years was like going from dying of thirst to drowning. But he had become used to dying of thirst. It was hot and painful, but it felt familiar, like prodding an ulcer to make sure it was still there.
[[a study in what it is to love completely, and obsessively. To be afraid you are too much for someone, that you love too much and you want too much]]

Summary
“Ignus fatuus,” Edwin read aloud, “or foolish flame. You may recognize its colloquial name, will-o’-the-wisp.”
“…Come again?”
“Will-o’-the-wisp?” Charles shook his head. “Friar’s lantern?” Charles stared blankly, still looking confused. “Sometimes referred to as jack-o’-lanterns?”
“What, you mean the Halloween pumpkins?”
“Oh for Heaven’s sake, Charles.”

Summary
Charles knows that Edwin is his best friend, the most important person in his life. He doesn't know exactly whether he's in love with him but he's damn sure he's going to try to work it out. And he feels like he's getting close.
Then a case, some black magic (and a fucking witch, probably) comes along and takes Edwin's memories of Charles away.
And suddenly Charles knows how he feels, what he wants more than anything.
But that thing is gone. Because Edwin is completely indifferent to him now. -

Summary
Edwin thinks about Hell, and the spiral staircase out of it, the shockingly solid feel of Charles’ hands on his collarbones, and—
Ah. Bugger.
He’s got an idea. It is, unfortunately, terrible.
