“Yeah,” Eddie says. “Book it.”
There’s a pause, not all that long in real time but for a conversation with Richie it lasts an eternity. “Yeah?” he says, sounding uncharacteristically uncertain. “We’re not like playing chicken, are we? Cause I have my credit card here.”
“No,” Eddie says, somehow getting the words out around the lump in his throat. “Do it. But if I land in LA sick with some kind of rare bacteria that only grows in Newark Liberty International Airport, you’re cleaning up my puke.”
“Okay,” Richie says, easy as anything. And it is. Easy. A few hours later Eddie is sitting in the waiting area by his gate, picking at a fifteen-dollar salad with some of the driest grilled chicken he’s ever had the misfortune of putting in his mouth.
