Summary
Rio stalks a slow, predatory circle around Agatha’s mother, running the sharp blade of her knife across her fingertips. God, she hates ghosts. They’re just water vapor and heightened emotion: all the most annoying things about human beings, with none of the fun parts. Nothing she can wrap her hands around and strangle. Nothing she can stab.
But that doesn’t mean there’s nothing she can do.
Rio has a little chat with her ex-mother-in-law.

Summary
The woman and her moss-coat drifted forward like she was walking on air. Her face seemed like one he had seen before, but when he tried to pull it out of his memories, there was nothing but a blank space, an open forest at the edge of a lake and he was alone.
“My name is Rio.”

Summary
That was the problem with Rio Vidal. She had a way of making terrible ideas seem brilliant at 2 AM. Like arguing about Homer until sunrise.
Like kissing her in the Classics library after hours, pressed up against the shelf containing five hundred years of scholarly works on Sappho, Agatha's hands tangled in Rio’s hair while Rio's mouth burned paths down her neck and made her forget every language she’d ever learned.
Three months of something too intense to be called a fling, too sharp to be called a romance. Three months of brilliant, terrible decisions that ended the way all brilliant, terrible decisions do: spectacularly badly.

Summary
On the night of Agatha's execution, Rio took a knife to her own chest and carved out her heart. The bloody thing soaked into the soil as Rio cried, pleading with nature itself to give Agatha more time. It was an easy trade, in theory: in exchange for Rio's eternal devotion to carrying out the duties of Death, Agatha's magic would claim the souls of anyone who attacked her.
Rio did not have any regrets about this barter until the day it killed their son.
