Loneliness is the monster that sleeps under Charlie’s bed. It hides behind the closet door and deep within each crevice of his room. And on days like this, it comes out to live inside him. To suffocate him. It seeps in through his pores and settles deep within his bones. It itches under his skin and wraps around his organs.
Or: Charlie stays home from school alone one day in the months before he goes to hospital. He's lonely before the Spring siblings come to the rescue.

Summary
Charlie didn’t like fighting with his mum. He wasn’t trying to get into argument after argument with her, especially over the stupidest of things. Like at dinner, when Charlie couldn’t eat another bite of chicken or he’d fail his Maths exam the next day and she just wouldn’t get it.
“Charlie,” she’d said sternly, her arms crossed over her chest, her head tilted slightly up. Charlie was mirroring her with his arms crossed over his chest, but he was looking down at the unappetizing piece of chicken. “Failing your Maths test has nothing to do with what you’re eating and more to do with spending all night on the phone with Nick.”
Admittedly, Charlie had stayed on the phone with Nick overnight on Monday, but it was because he needed someone to stop him from hurting himself again. He needed to hear Nick’s voice, see his beautiful face, and focus on what was good in his life. He’d made Tori babysit him on the weekend, he couldn’t bug her again. And while he felt bad for keeping Nick up, his boyfriend insisted, and he watched Nick doze off well before Charlie did, anyway.

But he could only shake his head. Because it wasn't a game. He was a boy. And he could tell from Sirius's nervously resigned expression that Sirius knew it, too.
