    Summary

“It’s a measure of one’s self, Mr Zhongli.” Childe says. “Maybe you don’t understand it since you work as a consultant, but as an ambassador from the Tsaritsa, as one who fights in her name— this is how I learn to know the measure of myself.”

“I understand,” Zhongli says thoughtfully. “It is a warrior’s way, to test one’s strength against the incomparable. To find where one falls short. To find where one has risen to the challenge.”

In which Childe has insomnia, vandalizes public property and runs into a mysterious funeral consultant on his first night in Liyue.

    Summary

“Kaveh,” Al-Haitham repeats like a broken record. Then, a hand on his cheek. A thumb under his eye, wiping away a tear he didn’t realize was falling. Knuckles under his chin, prompting him to meet Al-Haitham’s gaze.

    “Look at me.”

“What,” Kaveh tries to hiss, but his bottom lip trembles. The word is barely louder than a whisper. His resolve crumbles with every passing second that Al-Haitham looks at him like that.

And then he tilts his head curiously, eyes flickering up and down, and asks:

“Kaveh, you’re in love with me?”

Or, Kaveh gets drunk and says too much too fast.

    Summary

A head pops up on the other side of Straw Hat; the last of the fading sunlight refracts off Roronoa’s earrings, winking at her. “Oh,” he says, sounding only mildly surprised to see her. “You’re here too.”

“What are you talking about? What’s going on?”

Roronoa grins. “Yeah. He does this.”

Nami props herself up a little higher on her already bruising elbow. Straw Hat’s got an arm wrapped around Roronoa, same as her, pinning him to his other side.

“Okay,” Nami says, feeling her third headache in as many hours beginning to creep up. “What is this?”

“How he sleeps, I guess. Been doing it since we started sailing together.”

    “You’re joking.”

    Roronoa shrugs.

“Well, how do we get him to let go?”

“Dunno. Haven’t figured that part out yet,” Roronoa says and then, because he’s no help at all, lays back down.

    Summary

And then, Childe came crashing into his life.

He is a mess of ginger hair and lanky legs. His arms are scarred and muscular, but they were still soft around the edges. His hands are calloused and marred from a thousand fights, but the pads of his fingers are still loving and gentle. His eyes— beautiful and blue— might lack the bright reflection of light, but his cheeks still turn red and puff adorably when he is flustered. His abdomen might be rigid and taut, littered with the ghosts of several wounds, but it still flexes under Zhongli’s prodding fingertips as Childe laughs and laughs and laughs.

Childe is a paradox. A walking oxymoron. The definition of a juxtaposition.

    Zhongli adores him.

Or, Zhongli learns how to love.

    Summary

“I do not think he wishes to speak with me,” Zhongli tells her, even though the confession hurts more than he would care to admit.

“And I don’t think you know Childe as well as you think you do.” Lumine retorts, hands on her hips, looking thoroughly unimpressed.

“Yeah!” exclaims Paimon next to her, mirroring her posture.

The sight of them sending matching glares in his direction is something he would normally find amusing but instead, he feels himself jerk back, shocked at both the accusation and the distinctly flat tone of Lumine’s voice.

“I do,” he says, feeling slightly irked. “I do know Childe.”

Zhongli messes up, a bit. A lot.
