Summary
Leighton Murray has never been one to believe in soulmates, at least not in the way others do.
The proof is indisputable, sure, and she feels it with every injury she sustains that isn't of her own doing. The trauma link is damning, but she was never raised to put much stock into the whole phenomenon. In her world, people don't marry for love; marriage is a consolidation of wealth, power, and reputation, and that's just what her parent's want for her too.
So, when she runs headfirst into an exhausted PhD student at a coffee shop, she thinks nothing of it.
But then, she's there at dinner.
And then, her wallet is left behind, and Leighton is tasked with returning it.
The coincidences are stacking up, and Leighton's too logical to think much of it, but the universe may have other plans for her, and it's not going to take no for an answer.

Summary
“I would advise you be on time next time for pick up. It can make it so your kid gets the wrong message.”
“Listen,” she starts, leaning forward and putting her free hand on the table. “What’s your name?”
“Alicia,” comes the reply, simple, direct, undaunted. If anything, the woman is faintly amused.
“Alright. Listen here, Alicia,” Leighton hisses. “You know nothing about me. You know nothing about my family, and don’t you dare tell me—”
“MOM!”
Leighton forces her features to brighten as her eight-year-old daughter, one Nicole Jackson-Murray, comes barreling towards her.
(Or, a single-parent au where Leighton is picking up the pieces of her life, Alicia is a teacher at her daughter's school, and they both just really need to get their shit together.)

It’s weird to be given presents. It’s weird how people give them all the time up here. Like all the time. You moved house? Present. Having a kid? Present. Hurting? Get well present.
