It was around three or four in the morning when the best night of Monty’s life turned rapidly into the worst. They’d dropped Major Martin off around midnight; now, as he made his way to Spain, Monty and Charlie had continued their bar crawl. So far, Monty had lost £25 at roulette, imbibed more alcohol than he had previously thought possible by a human being, and had been kicked out of a dance hall for brawling. In other words, he was having a grand time!
