Summary
She flashes a smile at the public, tightens her jaw when she talks to the head of the local news station, his gaze never once leaving her cleavage, and it’s familiar: it’s the practised steps of a dance she’s done too many times. JJ organises. She dictates. She negotiates. She doesn’t think about Emily.
Or, JJ struggles her way through back to back unrelenting cases, and feelings that threaten to drown her. From there, it all goes wrong.

Summary
Sometimes it’s enough, the huff of Emily’s breath in her ears, if she squeezes her eyes closed it’s like she’s there. JJ can imagine the scent of her, almost feel her fingers brushing over the soft skin of her wrist, like if she opens her eyes, she’ll be met with the point of Emily’s nose a hair away from hers, about to nudge against her cheek, mouth poised above hers in a silent question. It only ever lasts for a few beats, and then she’s propelled back into the reality of a cellphone on her pillow in lieu of a warm body, nothing to greet her but the cold stillness of her empty apartment.
Or, JJ calls bullshit on the old idiom that absence makes the heart grow fonder, and deals with her world falling apart in the process.
