He makes his way to the couch, and Henry looks up with a soft smile. “Evening, love. Long day?” Henry’s tone is light, but his eyes are sharp, watching Alex’s every tell, filing away every blink and nose scrunch and eyebrow wrinkle.
All Alex can manage in response is a heavy sigh, the breath leaving him in a pained rush as he drops onto the couch, throwing his legs up and settling his head in Henry’s lap. He doesn’t even need to ask, doesn’t need to try—Henry’s fingers are already in Alex’s hair, nimble and gentle. At the first dig of firm fingertips, Alex hisses at the tenderness in his scalp. Everything above his shoulders feels extra sensitive, skin stretched over his body, reaching a limit he tries so hard to avoid but inevitably hits on a weekly basis. When will he learn?
“Sorry, sorry,” Alex says, squeezing his eyes shut.
A cool finger runs along Alex’s brow bone, pressing into the ridge and pulling a pleased exhale from him. “None of that. I have you now.”
Or, Alex has a long day and a terrible headache, and Henry comforts him.

Five days a week, Alex sits across from Henry for 58 minutes in the morning, rattling on about the virtues of the Tube and how efficient it is compared to the NYC subway, or his irrational dislike of Pret coffee, or a new bookstore he thinks Henry would like.
Five days a week, Alex and Henry leave the shelter together to take the bus home. They almost always end up standing for part of the way, occasionally bumping up against each other. Sometimes, Alex doesn't move away. It's nice.
