Alhaitham doesn't concern himself with what he can't understand. Human emotions are fleeting, coming and going with no rhyme or reason. Best to let them pass him by. If everyone else thought that way, no one would have any problems at all, but unfortunately, Alhaitham has empathy, and other people's problems assault him from every direction. When he lived alone, it was easier to isolate himself from the emotions of others. It's been years since the house was only his, and now Kaveh spends every night drunk and alone in his room with a knife.
Alhaitham may not know much, but he knows his roommate is in pain. He's practical, but he's not heartless, and trying to be won't help anyone.
Maybe it's time to figure out these feelings hands-on.

Sometimes there's nothing to do but wait and hope.
In a situation such as the one Fontaine is facing, it is necessary to triage, to prioritize. The people of Fontaine need clean water, unspoiled food, shelter that will not collapse on them in the night, and they need these things immediately. Exports may not be restored for months.
It is only logical that exports of medicine made from a variant of Beryl Conch to treat a condition found in less than one in ten thousand people will be low on the list of priorities.
Even if that medicine is the only barrier between Alhaitham and a gradual slide into death.

Summary
When Alhaitham coughs up the first petal the week after his disastrous fallout with Kaveh, he knows right away his life will be cut short.
However, he isn't exactly the type to go down without a fight. There's still several things he wants to do with his last few years- whether that be taking down the government, or getting through his extensive reading list.
The question is, can Alhaitham figure out his place in this world before the flowers send him to an early grave?
