Ratio isn’t looking at his face, busy pressing down at Aventurine’s wound, staring at the vials still lying next to him.
“Veritas–” Aventurine tries again.
With monumental effort, he manages to lift one shaking hand back on his stomach, brushing his fingers against Ratio’s.
“Kakavasha,” he says, the gift from the goddess he had thrown aside long ago spilling from his lips like a secret.
Like a prayer.
Only not to any god. Just a man.

“No,” Ren says. His eyes teeter dangerously into flame, fingers twitching around his shoulders. Battle cuts the edges right back into him, heedless of body, of flesh. “You must. You are not allowed to die.”
While lost in the depths of an overgrown planet, Ren and Dan Heng reach an impasse.

Steady, steady breaths.
“Why,” he returns, “do you even ask, Ratio? Are you here to gloat at my defeat? Ah, yes—finally, a gamble that I will certainly lose. A perfect time to—”
“Is it impossible for your diminutive neurons to connect,” Ratio’s book shuts with a resounding snap. It echoes like a bullet, ricocheting between the walls of Aventurine’s chest, until it descends into the heaviness itself. “And suppose that others do not truly wish for your death?”
Aventurine is stricken by Hanahaki disease. For the first time in years, he finds himself unable to gamble his life.

“Would you come?” He asks. Asking a question that direct would be breaking the unwritten rules between the two of them if he wasn't so sure that Aventurine treats conversations as a game. Most questions are to him not to be answered but to be danced around. If, by some miracle, he does answer honestly, it will not be because he feels put on the spot.
“Of course I would,” he answers easily, almost too quickly, “though I would be very upset with you if you died before me.”
“Vice versa, gambler. Would you really deny my funeral of your company?”
