Once upon a time, The Hero Party rescued a kidnapped woman from a monster’s den. She cried and kicked and screamed, “Don’t take me back! Don’t take me back there!” all the way to her husband’s house.
“She’s gone mad,” the townspeople gossiped. “Enthralled by wicked magicks!”
But you knew.
You knew because while the rest of the party dissected the monster’s body for spoils, you saw to the rest of the den. Two pairs of shoes neatly arranged on a rug before the door. A small table with two plates of half-eaten supper. A still smoldering hearth. Furs sewn together into a bed large enough for a human and a mindflayer.
And that was before you found the letters.
