He stands still as death near the front door to listen, prying the night birdcalls away from the insect noises away from the drip of last evening’s rain off the eaves, and thinks to himself, things like these keep people alive. -

For a long time, it had been his table. For all that he’d rarely eaten, and even more rarely would do so at home, it had been his table, barely touched, seldom thought of. A piece of furniture that he’d put somewhere convenient and then never really considered again. Why would he? A table is a table.
Except when Tang Fan began to sit at it, and it became something..more. He gravitated towards it, furniture as necessary as a bed, as a wardrobe. Something to be used daily - multiple times a day. A place to meet, and to eat, and to drink, and to make Sui Zhou wonder why the hell he ever agreed to let the man come live with him at all. And then Dong’er had grown comfortable, and then she’d been the one to help him set the table. To call him or Tang Fan in to eat together. To turn the table into even more than a meeting place - to begin to turn it into the center around which their strange little family was built.

Yet Zishu still hadn’t yet managed to get the handsome young man beside him to say anything that might hint at the person behind the smiling mask he wore. Surely there was a limit to Kexing’s composure, uncomfortable as it was to have to play such a trick on a person Zishu liked. It reminded him of every story he had ever heard about his kind. Treacherous and selfish, disloyal and ruthless. Distracted, Zishu lost another round, but Kexing’s joyous laughter stole away any disappointment he could feel.
