Now that they are in Europe, further away from their handlers and masters, the sheer distance means they are somewhat more at liberty to do what they want and not what they are expected to do... JC Denton is the one who finds them, and not the other way around.

Luke yelled in defiance, lunging up wildly and slashing at Vader. Sparks and the smell of burned flesh filled the air. Vader’s enraged cry of pain shocked Luke so much, he barely missed being beheaded by Vader’s retaliating swing. Instead, the strike connected with his wrist, cutting off his hand and sending it and his lightsaber spinning off into the depths of the reactor shaft.
