The girl seemed to realize that she'd drawn attention, and her dark brown eyes met his gaze. He smiled at her, trying to project an air of friendliness. She remained tense, but didn't run off as he slowly approached.
The likelihood of the girl knowing Sign was small, so Joey waved at her in greeting... then went ahead and tried.
'Hey, my name's Joey,' he signed slowly. The girl tracked the movements of his hands, but her stare was uncomprehending. He dug out his phone for another try. Her look was curious as he tapped out a message on his text-to-speech program.
He crouched slightly and played out the message he'd typed.
”Hello. My name is Joey. What's your name?“
She was still watching the phone, but didn't react to the sounds at all. Joey studied her. Dirt was caked under her fingernails, and she seemed to be around ten or so, if he had to guess. She needed help.
On the way to pick up some groceries, Joey comes across a young girl. She's dressed in old clothes and entirely uncommunicative. He thinks she might be deaf. He wants to help her. They go to a bodega together.

Summary
Batman: Re-imagined
In this world, Bruce Wayne managed to successfully heal himself through therapy and consequently did not take on the mantle of being Gotham's vigilante.
