He’d been lying awake most nights since it had happened, his mind a hurricane of anger and pain that he couldn’t quite decipher. It was a strangely familiar grief- after all their family was no stranger to death- but with it came a sense of guilt and shame that he was afraid to acknowledge.
He squeezed his eyes shut as the image appeared in his mind again.
Crimson blood against white armor.
A glass blade through his wife’s ribcage.
A weak hand outstretched for him.
Beautiful dark eyes turned suddenly blank.
He tried so hard to push the memory away, even as he listened more intently to the sound of her breathing beside him, but it still was there.

“Is this them?” A voice that Vesper did not recognize sounded and magic flared to life in Vesper’s hands in defense of her siblings without thinking about it much. The nearest to her was Gwen, and Vesper stepped in front of her little sister protectively. Vesper’s jaw tightened and shoulders tensed, and her eyes flickered to her father to gage his reaction.
He gave her a slight shake of his head to tell her everything was all right and Vesper’s magic died down.

Summary
Percy had cheekily started to refer to this as Vex and Keyleth’s Girls Night. It happened a few times a year, not as often as anyone wanted, and Vex would be completely unreachable while gone. Percy never worried for her safety, he knew Keyleth would never let anything happen to her. She was maybe as protective of her as Percy himself was.
Honestly, maybe more.
Keyleth of the Air Ashari the Voice of the Tempest and Vex’ahlia DeRolo; Baroness of the First House of Whitestone, Grandmistress of the Grey Hunt, Coinmistress of The Council of Tal’dorei, Champion of Pelor would sneak away from their respective duties, leaving all guards and personal assistants behind, and for one- maybe two nights- they were just Kiki and Vex.
