The clock on the wall struck midnight, and Mafuyu still hadn’t come home yet.
Letting out a long sigh, Kanade shut her laptop and leaned back into the couch, eyes wandering around the cluttered room before finally settling on the front door. She searched for some flicker of movement through the clouded windows, waited for the sound of jingling keys or the familiar creak of the doorknob, but the door remained firmly shut, just as it had been for the last several hours. At this point, Kanade recognized, it likely wasn’t going to open for the rest of the night.
Maybe, she thought to herself, I’ll wait out here for a little while longer.

When Mafuyu started walking, any protests that Kanade could have had immediately died in her throat. She was vividly aware of the close contact between them: Mafuyu’s broad hands clasped firmly around her sides, the taut muscles in their stomach that contracted and released with each step, the occasional brush of bare skin when the hem of Kanade’s sweatshirt would hike up a little too far. She wondered nervously if Mafuyu could feel the hammering of her heartbeat through their jacket sleeves, and then decided that she didn’t care and nestled a little closer into the familiar warmth of their torso.

Kanade catches her breath just as the princess turns, and loses it in the same second. The crown princess is beautiful, she thinks.
As Fate, her personal torturer, would have it, a dancer does not stay still, and so the princess’ gaze drifts over to Kanade’s general direction as she sways to a slight turn. The composer can not help but shiver, even as that gaze flies right past her.
The passing look only takes a second, but it is enough for Kanade to recognize the look in the princess’ eye… It was a look she often saw in her own reflection.
