He is unable to loosen his grip, to cast it into the flames. There is something about it—the sad button eyes or maybe the scrap burlap hair that stops him. Maybe it is Hamilton’s hair, tucked away inside, the way it always seems to smell like him no matter where it has been. Burr keeps it close. Wears it in his waist jacket, sets it beside himself on the bed at night. There is nothing wrong with this, he tells himself. He knows he is lying.
