On the run from murder accusations and the bounty hunters he used to ride with, Ballister finds himself in the company of the reddest red horse he's ever laid eyes on. A horse that happens to also be his partner in crime, his attack dog, his messenger bird, his scout, his hunting hound, and his firestarter. A kid that would kill or die for him on a whim.
He would rather prefer she didn't kill or die for him, but sometimes you have to take what you can get.

A rushed reformation more than a year after her death leads to Ballister and Ambrosius caring for her in secret while she comes to terms with how perceptions of her have changed, and the three try to figure out how and when to tell the kingdom their monster-turned-hero is back.

Summary
As he packs to move out of his Institute-assigned apartment, Ambrosius reflects.
‘Hey,’ Bal says softly, and Ambrosius realizes he must look pensive. ‘I was just kidding. I love that you kept all this stuff.’
‘Oh. Yeah, I know,’ he says. He fiddles with the photo reel. ‘It’s just—it’s—all these memories feel kind of… tainted, now. Not—not the you part, but—’
He breaks off, rubbing his fingers over his eyes, unsure how to explain himself. Because truthfully, it’s hard to look at these things, to think of how young and happy they were, how much they adored each other, and know not only what they were working in service of, but what he’d later do to Bal, too. He wants to cling to these memories but he’s not sure he deserves them. He wants to feel that way again, but it’s hard to look at these photos and not think about the parts of their foundations—the way they met, the things they wanted for themselves back then—that were built on lies.
