    Summary

“What,” she repeated coldly, “did he do to my son.”

“He implanted the device into his brain,”  Pogo said wearily. “And it performed as it was meant to. It disrupted Master Five’s sense of time. It also activated whenever he instinctively attempted time travel, blocking the synapses that would, in essence, complete the circuit and allow him that ability.”

“So what you’re saying,” Efa said, “is that Hargreeves permanently crippled him.” When Pogo opened his mouth to protest, she waved a dismissive hand at him. “All for the good of the world, yes, I get it. You forget, I got a taste of my son’s abilities moments after his birth. I’ve had a lot of time to ponder the implications of what he can do. And you need to understand that the only reason I handed my son over was because I am all too aware that he might not have survived beyond infanthood in my care. And yet you tell me that you believe that he attempted time travel into the future. Why would he do that if he knew he was literally, physically incapable of using his powers in that way?”

Doctor Pogo gazed at her solemnly and didn’t answer.

“You didn’t tell him,” she said, anger once again stirring within her. “He didn’t know about the implant.”
