Summary
Knowing the gods, it probably just means that Scamandrius will one day kill him, and Odysseus is surprised to find that that doesn’t scare him all that much. If it isn’t Scamandrius killing him, it will be some other tragic and ironic end. That’s just how it is for heroes.
He caused the downfall of Troy. He caused the murder and enslavement of their royal family and the trampling of their legacy. Odysseus could choose to continue as the cruel general he was for the last ten years, going on to be a ruthless monarch for the next few decades then dying of old age or being killed by some usurper, or he could try his best to turn over a new leaf, to be kind and raise this boy to do the same for as long as he lives.
It’s no contest, in the end.
~OR~
Odysseus decides not to commit infanticide. Now he has to deal with a child AND bloodthirsty monsters, for the next ten years at sea.
