He’s not sure why. But he does, and that fact alone is enough to make him feel some kind of embarrassment.
He knows there’s no real age requirement or limitation to properly exercise empathy, but 16 felt a little too old to be crying about his “mommy.” Still, that doesn’t disregard the fact that he still does.
She didn’t leave—she’s just distant. In fact, her physical presence still lingers in the house that he’s no longer invited to. Quiet and subdued.
He thinks his mother is just inherently reserved. A conclusion he came to during his formative years. Six, possibly eight.

Shoko exhaled slowly, a smile playing on her lips, though it didn’t quite reach her eyes. "You’re starting to sound like an old man, Gojo."
"Hey, don’t mock me." He shot her a playful glare, though his heart wasn’t really in it. "I’m serious."
"I know you are," she said, her tone softening. She set the cigarette down on the ashtray and turned to face him fully. "But we’re not like other people. We’ve never had the luxury of normal. And maybe that’s okay."
"Is it?" Satoru asked, a quiet vulnerability slipping through.

Summary
When he sees her, the innate urge to ignore her becomes increasingly apparent.
Not so much because he doesn’t want to be around her, but more so because he doesn’t feel particularly interested in being verbally accosted at 10 pm at night, especially considering the day he had.
In all actuality, he would’ve preferred to be in the comfort of his poorly decorated, minimalist bachelor pad, using the sound of the city as a backdrop for the deafening volume of his own pessimism.
To some extent, he thinks he deserves it. An opportunity to wallow in his own discomfort. All things considered, he's been through a lot of shit, it's only fair that he's entitled to bitch about it for a little while.

"Ijichi!?" Satoru deadpanned as his friend fixed the bow-tie around his neck. "Ijichi of all fucking people?!"
Satoru didn’t find a tie necessary for graduation.
He didn’t find it necessary for any occasion actually.
But especially considering the fact that his graduating class consisted all of three people, the decision to write the occasion off as informal wasn’t particularly difficult.
In all honestly he had considered skipping the entire event all together, finding amusement in horror that would be both flashed and shared across the faces of his parents and sensei alike. Plus the smirk that would be sported by his two classmates acted as enough motivation in of itself.
However that was until Shoko had invited herself into his dorm one night. Small box in hand that, after tearing the wrapping paper to shreds, contained a small yellow tie. Silk by the feel of it. With her quote saying “I’ve always liked the color on you.”

However, her appreciation for professionalism and all that fell in between was not so much unshared, just ignored.
And she had come to terms with that.

“Like what?” Shoko asked as she brushed through her hair, noticing the strands of white caught in the bristles. He had his own damn hairbrush.
Satoru shrugged, leaning against the bathroom counter, watching her complete the task. Her hair was getting longer. It suited her.
“Like you mean it.”
Shoko scoffed, reaching over him to grab a clip.
“I do mean it.”

Shoko looks up from perusing the items Satoru just handed her. “Kageshiro and Kuroha Sato,” she reads. “Looks properly legit.”
“Right? State seal and all and—oh.” He hands the certificate to her and fishes another smaller black envelope inside. Two gold rings fall on his hand when he upturns it. “Wedding rings.”
“I promise if it were up to me, your wedding ring would’ve been prettier. Rose gold with a princess-cut diamond and all that shit. Nothing as plain as this. Let’s have a fruitful partnership, Kuroha-san,” Satoru says, grinning as he does. He throws his ring to Shoko who deftly catches it with her other hand not held by him. “Your turn.”
“Just Kuro is fine. I’m your wife after all.” Shoko shoves the ring on Satoru’s finger unceremoniously, glad he didn’t go too far, and knelt on one knee. He seems like the type. “Likewise. Let’s have a fruitful partnership, Shiro.”

It was something Shoko never understood— she doesn’t think she understands it even now, this need to prove their strength and power. Countless nights she has stayed up taking sips of whatever liquor she has been able to get her hands on, gulps that burn down her throat and make her gasp, drink after drink while a few months of her youth play inside her mind like an old movie. Sometimes she watches it through rose-tinted glasses and she allows herself to feel the sweet melancholy of a time when things seemed simpler. Other times the footage in her mind’s eye is dark and stained with regret, narrated by a resentful voice that sounds suspiciously sweet, suspiciously raspy, achingly familiar, gone:
You could have done this. You could have noticed that. You could have done more. Why didn’t you? Shoko, why didn’t you?
