Every time Eddie shows him a house, he tries to imagine the Diazes in it. He tries to picture how Eddie’s frog soap holder will look on the kitchen sink and how Christopher’s room will be decorated and where they’ll put a new couch in the living room. He tries to picture them living in it – going to work and school and PTA meetings, and it’s all fine. He can picture them happy in every suburban house.
It’s the absence of himself there with them that makes his stomach turn.
