Oswald never considered himself a philosophical man, but there was one quote he’d read in one of the books on Edward’s nightstand years ago: “Hope, in reality, is the worst of all evils because it prolongs the torments of man.”
He hadn’t agreed with it at the time, but it eventually became a mantra whenever he found himself getting too close.
Unfortunately, the Riddler had no such considerations.

Summary
Oswald sighed and sat down on the edge of Ed’s bed. The actions of the day, compounded with his usual pain deep in his bones, were making it hard for him to remain standing. “I can’t imagine you’ll sleep like a baby given you just had the equivalent of—say ‘ahh.’” Ed rolled his eyes but opened his mouth anyways. Oswald’s hand was gentle on his jaw as he angled Ed’s face into the light. “The equivalent of six unanesthetized root canals.”
Oswald and Ed go back home after their day of sacrifices. Ed is not coping with the pain as well as he thought he would.
