Summary
When Edwin has a nightmare, he doesn't wake up screaming. Charles didn't understand it, not completely, not until Port Townsend. He didn't know what chased Edwin through his dreams. Some days, he wishes he still didn't know. Not as often as he wishes Edwin didn't.
Or: one time Edwin has a nightmare, and one time he doesn't.

Summary
Edwin returned to the envelope, from which his attention should never have veered, and opened it with a single, precise cut. The letter opener was returned to Charles – another brief, searing touch – as Edwin carefully removed and unfolded the glossy paper. The crest in the letterhead, a bloody wound against the white background, immediately caught his eye.
“St. Hil’s, innit?” Charles, leaning over Edwin’s shoulder, confirmed what they both knew. They exchanged a dark, speaking glance. No, neither of them had fond memories of that place.Or: Edwin attends his high school reunion and is very normal about his (legal) partner.

Summary
Because all Charles wants—has always wanted since the first time they ran away from Death together—is for Edwin to be happy. He wants to rekindle that spark in Edwin’s eyes and watch it bloom, free and fearless.
And the thing is… Charles is the one holding the match that can light that fire, isn't he?
Oh.
Or: How a seemingly run-of-the-mill case, ye olde repression, and Edwin Payne’s collarbones give Charles Rowland his bisexual awakening. Though not necessarily in that order.
