    Summary

“A Dead Man Walking” is a common phrase or idiom meaning someone is to face inevitable doom. Exaggerating in comparison to death despite living.

Hunter Clawthorne learns this phrase in his English class. His cousin Edric says their mothers are dead men walking. His voice is glum and his smile falls. And Hunter can do nothing but nod along.

Eda Clawthorne and Lilith Blight have chronic illness. It is something that is unspoken in their households even when it lingers in the back of their minds.

So Hunter goes home that night and falls into his mother’s lap. The sun of South Carolina falling wistfully on their faces.

He does not think of the time running out. He does not think of when he will eventually lose her.

He only clings onto what is already doomed.
