It was supposed to be a Market Day like any other. Rapunzel’d had enough poultices and serums to cure the plague, and by noon she’d practically sold every bottle at her stand. With all that pretty coin, she’d stopped by the butcher for some good rabbit meat and some of Old Lady Crowley’s veg of the season.
But just as the nice butcher man was handing over her order… A crash in the street. A horse whinnied in shock and men’s voices carried over the rooftops.
“Devil! There's a devil!! Out there in the woods!”
Rapunzel froze. They sounded grown. Like the kind of townie men who don't scare for nothing.
“We saw it! We saw it with blood on its face! An unholy beast straight outta Hell!”
She and the butcher exchanged a pale look. She tucked her package into her basket and stepped out onto the street. Just as she thought, it was a hunters party strapped with rifles and axes and yet… They looked perfectly helpless. The fear written on their faces was unfamiliar, fear like nothing she could put a name to.
