Wen Kexing was in no doubt that his husband valued him as more than a bartering piece.
Still, knowing it wasn’t the same as hearing it, and every dodged confession made Wen Kexing more determined to inspire one. By the time they’d been married six weeks, he’d realized that if he wanted that confession, he was going to have to work for it, and very probably play dirty.

“Oh,” Wen Kexing said. It was the painkillers talking, she knew, the high dosage that had been needed to have any effect after years of careless self-medicating. The first time A-Xu regained consciousness after her operation she kissed the back of Wen Kexing’s hand and called it beautiful; the next day she said they should travel somewhere together the moment she is released from the hospital. And barely yesterday, Wen Kexing overheard it as she was telling one of the nurses that they shouldn’t mind her crazy wife (wife!) — and yes, sure, she is lucky to have her.

Summary
Wen Kexing grips the back of the worn kitchen chair, the rough wood scraping his fingers, and takes a gulping breath. “I’m going - I’m just gonna go,” he says while hoping Zhou Zishu can’t see the tears threatening to spill over red-rimmed eyes. He doesn’t wait for a response and turns, grabbing a jacket and his keys as he escapes out the door. There’s a sharp intake of breath as the door shuts behind him, but he doesn’t dare to stop. He’s going to leave before Zhou Zishu can tell him to leave. He’s always been a liar, but maybe he’s also a coward. Either way, he can’t be here to actually hear it.
