    Summary

Carter knows she cares too much, she's been told so by every commanding officer she's ever had; and that caring keeps her sharp but also puts her in danger of burning out. So once in a while she takes a moment to breathe, to remember who she is when she doesn't have on a badge.

So she doesn't feel guilty about it, when Fusco calls and says, "Carter, sorry, know it's your day off, but I think we're going to need you down here--"

    Summary

Harold’s fingers steeple in front of his mouth, up to the thin press of his lips. His eyes are avid watchers.
You have to know what it’s like to hear someone get murdered and be unable to do a thing about it.
There is so much that can go wrong.
He never really grows accustomed to the fluttering panic he feels when he looks up to a monitor empty of his tall partner, when signal lost bleeds red light across his screen, when the Machine has to sift and sort and search and seek—no, he never grows accustomed to it, the looming sensation of it, how he braces and steels himself against unfathomable loss. How sometimes he can only watch when John goes somewhere he cannot follow, and has to trust that he’ll come back out – that he can give John a way back out.

He could feel the warmth soaking into him, like—like honey into the dough, in those pastries Finch liked. They'd watched a documentary about it, the other week.

He found himself smiling. There wasn't any reason, he thought, not to pick up some of those pastries on the way in to the library.
