Summary
Often Figaro goes to the shore. The ocean, too, changes. Sometimes the water eats at the sand; then, hours later, it will recede like a tamed beast, and Figaro can walk where before he would have drowned. The prints he leaves behind—his little feet, bare, the shoes too precious to waste on such frivolities—are swept away soon enough. At the next ocean’s recession, they’re wiped, like they had never existed.
He is not as proficient in determining when the water will rise and when it will fall as he is in telling the phases of the moon, and how they impact the ocean itself. When the moon is either filled with light or filled with black, the water rises to its highest and falls to its lowest. Figaro watches the heavens religiously, noting the shape of the moon, expecting the ocean to bow or surge before it as it likes.
