    Summary

"In the country (a denomination which, as matters are commonly conducted, he can by no means allow to the neighbourhood of London) the contagion of vice and folly, it may be presumed, is not so epidemical. In short, he is persuaded, that women of worth and sense are to be found every where, but most frequently in the calm of retreat, and amidst the coolness of recollection."

    - Preface, Sermons to Young Women, by James Fordyce (1809)

Elizabeth"s rejection of Mr. Collins"s proposal created a veritable fracas within the Bennet household"s female contingent. In Mary"s estimation, it was both foolish and tactless, the way they all carried on. As expected, Lydia found a great deal of unabashed amusement in the circumstance while, in her vexation at Lizzie’s conduct, their mother once again descended into near-hysterics.

What Mary had not anticipated intruding upon her amidst this strange semblance of domestic peace to which she"d grown so accustomed was that she"d have any feelings about the matter at all.

    Summary

In which Mr. Bennet finds a use for his most studious daughter: dealing with any uninteresting correspondence. That is to say, all but that from his academic fellows and rare books dealers. Thus, a Mary Bennet, still as studious and somewhat awkward as in canon, but newly familiar with legal notices such as those regarding entails, the bills and orders required to properly run a household, and letters about investments from Mr. Gardiner, stumbles across the initial letter from Mr. Collins, as well as a follow up inquiring about whether a response had been lost in the mail. She takes it upon herself to reply in her father’s place.
