"I know," she says, a little wild. And she knows that. She does. "I love you too."
That hasn't changed for her since they weren't saying it. It's a fact of life, the creek runs clear, she loves David Rose.
Soft footfalls edge around the garden bed and then they're all kneeling in a messy little heap.
"Stevie," Patrick says.
"I'm not saying it again."
"Okay," he laughs, "I love you too, you know."

He takes her hands. They're gritty with sweat and labor, rows and rows of vegetables tangled up in plans for future seasons. Somehow, she put down roots here without talking about it.
