Shimizu had been good at track, but she’d never been good in the might-go-pro kind of way. She’d been good enough to be their team’s ace in the hole, good enough to get promoted to captain in her third year, but never anywhere further.“No,” she finally mumbles, taken aback a bit because it’s the first time she’s said it aloud. The reality settles in her chest like a stone dropped into a pond.
“That’s a shame,” her coach says, out of obligation more than anything.
