Summary
Robbe loved Noor. Robbe loved God. Most important of all, Robbe loved his mother. He went to church every Sunday, prayed before eating (even just in a whisper to himself at school, hands clasped under the lunch table), and even had special pens for annotating the Bible because it made his mother happy that he memorized the verses. He kept it and his little red pencil pouch on his bedside table, next to the lamp. Whenever his mother was in his room, she would look at it and smile. Robbe, however, couldn’t look at it without feeling a weight sink in his gut. As proudly as that book sat on his table to see, the work he looked at far more often was shamefully tucked away in a shoebox underneath his bed. Instead of containing the holy word, its pages were filled with unholy images of half-naked men, beads of sweat dripping down their necks, muscles flexed, teasing v-line cutting off right at the edge of the page. Unless he was lost in its pages, he could, for the most part, pretend it didn’t exist. However, he couldn’t pretend any longer when he came home from school to find his mother and Noor sitting at the dining room table, his shame laid out for all the world to see.

“And how old are you?” He knows he’s not going to get anything done until the kid doesn’t get all her answers, so he decides to sit down, giving his back a little break.
