Shane looked up from his beer.
“A lighter what?”
“A lighter, like–” The man, who Shane had never seen before, probably (he must not have, everyone he’d met knew to leave him the fuck alone, but new people didn’t come to Pelican Town), mimed something with his thumb. He reached up to rub his chest.
“Why, you wanna set the bar on fire? I don’t know you. Fuck off.”
Shane looked back down at his beer.

Summary
Doctor Robotnik is a solitary man. He rarely sees anything outside of his laboratory, and his only regular source of interaction is his remarkably reliable assistant, Stone. The doctor likes it that way.
One day, Stone goes missing.
After a brief period of stewing and worrying, ultimately accepting that his assistant has left (and really, he had expected it from the start, so why on earth is it causing him this much distress), the doctor is swept into a contract deal that he can't refuse.
Not everything is as it seems.
Will the doctor and his assistant find each other again?

"Oh?" said Fabian. "Who did you have a crush on?"
"Someone entirely unsuitable, who could honestly be quite an oblivious, pompous ass sometimes," said Adaine, folding her arms across her chest.
Riz laughed, attempting to cover the sound with a cough. Fabian narrowed his eyes at Riz. He wasn't as good of a detective as Riz, but he was quite well-versed by now in the particular minutia of Riz's expressions.
"You know who she had the crush on," said Fabian.
Fabian figures things out, and then he doesn't. Riz and Adaine don't figure things out, and then they do.

It is becoming easier, almost, to adjust to the new way of life. He has switched to using his left hand to cast the spell, and the effects are creeping further and further up his left arm with each passing day, even if they vanish by the next morning.
But that is an understandable price to pay. A reasonable price, if it keeps everyone else safe. It doesn’t matter, really, if he has started to find more and more lacerations from stray waves of shadow each morning as he lies in his untouched bed. It doesn’t matter that the pupils of his eyes, when he gazes into the reflective glass of the captain’s desk, are starting to disappear entirely. Nor that he will sometimes start at the faint feeling of fingers threading around his neck, tracing the line of his cheek.
“Praesidio. Praesidio, fortier defendebant, defendebant splendide...”
The Rocks family is safe. Any price is worth that.
