“You called her babe,” he muttered. James made a sort of confused noise against his neck.
“I did,” he murmured. He was quiet for a moment, like he was waiting for Regulus to say more, but he didn’t. He pulled back slightly. “Is… is that it?”
“I didn’t like it,” Regulus said like it was a warning.
“Oh?”
Regulus narrowed his eyes. “You did it on purpose,” he said, and it came out far more as an accusation than he intended, that same hot feeling from earlier surfacing again in his chest.
James didn’t answer, just breathed a laugh and sucked at the skin under Regulus’ ear. Regulus tensed his jaw a little, and with his free hand, he snaked his fingers up into James’ hair and pulled his head back a bit so they were looking at each other in the eyes. James’ ears were red and his eyes were half-lidded, almost dazed. He blinked at Regulus slowly.

“You do your thing,” he murmured. “And I’ll do mine. And then we’ll come home, and we’ll do each other. Good?” James blinked at him for a second, and then he did that stupid half smile with that stupid dimple and Regulus groaned, rolling his eyes. “I’m spending too much time around you,” he grumbled, resting his cheek against james’ shoulder. “Christ, that was corny.”
“I thought it was funny,” James shrugged.
“That’s because you’re corny.”
James laughed, and Regulus listened to the sound of it rumble in his chest.

Oh.
Oh he was kind of beautiful wasn’t he? Had Regulus always been?
To anyone else, he was all sharp edges and scathing remarks, but not to James. He could never be just that to James.
He could never just…be, to James.
And oh no.
That was new.

Gryffindor! Regulus gets the happy ending he should’ve gotten in the first place. And maybe they all learn a little about love and bravery along the way.
