Tim glanced over at Damian, who was inspecting the walls more closely, just like Bruce had always told them to do. He seemed so small all of the sudden, and Tim was hit with a visceral reminder that that was his little brother. He'd always wanted a sibling, and now he had so many. Damian was his only younger sibling though. The only one that he was really responsible for.
He'd do anything, anything, to make sure his baby brother was safe.
Suddenly, the metal door began to open, and Tim leapt forward, ignoring the pain in his head and pulling Damian behind him quickly.
He'd do anything.

Rain poured down in sheets, relentless just like everything else in Gotham. Relentless rain, relentless crime, relentless corruption, relentless death. There was no such thing as moderation. You either live or you die. You're either as rich as Bruce Wayne, or you end up suddenly as good as an orphan at only seven years old, kneeling at your mother's simple gravestone in the rain.

Summary
No matter what anyone said, Dick refused to give up the scaly green (very short) shorts of his suit. He hadn’t been Robin for long, but he was going to stick to his guns, gosh darn it.
That being said… Gotham’s winters were very, very cold, and very, very rainy, and the skin-colored tights helped, but not as much as he wanted them to. Obviously, he was not going to be telling Batman about his discomfort, because that was the quickest way to either get sent home for the night, or worse-be forced to add pants to the Robin costume. He would never.

Summary
Child neglect isn't all bad, Tim tells himself when his parents sends apologies and mail-delivered gifts and an increased credit line for his 10th birthday. None of the other ten-year-olds have this kind of independence -- even Robin has a bedtime. And he's heard from Ives that his parents limit his "screentime", which sounds quite barbaric. So this is fine, really. He's ten and will be starting eighth grade in the fall. He doesn't need his parents in order to thrive, he can grow on his own, in the shadow of their neglect and inattention. He can be their set-it-and-forget-it kid.

Tim is doing great being an independent vigilante, he's fine! He doesn't need help, he's definitely not estranged from the family -- he's just being independent.
Good thing he's part of a family of detectives who have their own ways of reaching out.

Or: in a universe where Jason wasn't killed by the Joker, where Tim's parents die on a plane accident when he's 13 years old, his uncle Eddie steps up to take care of him per his parents request.
