    Eddie wiped his cheeks absentmindedly, the tears spreading over his skin as new ones just replaced them. He kept his eyes on either the consistent rise and fall of Buck’s chest or the constant beep of his heart monitor - whatever it took to remind his brain that Buck was, in fact, alive.

    Taking a deep breath, Eddie slid his phone from his pocket, opening his texts with Chris, ignoring all the unread good night texts, and instead composing a new message.

    "Let me know when you wake up. We need to talk. It's important."

    “Mind what?”

    “If you and Dad were dating,” Chris replied, “I would be okay with it.”

    Chris hadn’t looked up from his switch, eyes fixated on exploring a darker part of a cave, but his voice was steady, as if he had already planned this conversation in his head.
