Hope shone her grace on him when his long-time friend, the Anemo Archon, told him of a miraculous traveler who had purified an elemental relic corrupted by the Abyss, and he actively sought her out to bind her to a contract to purify himself.
But alas, to cleanse a tainted Archon is easier said than done.

(He only actually learned what his elation was about after Xingqiu mustered up the courage to clarify for him after Lantern Rite one year, his usually confident expression flushed with embarrassment at how he had talked so fast that Chongyun didn't even understand him.)
Xingqiu sighed. “Chongyun. Dearest. Please do not make me spell it out for you.” He looked at him with a kind of desperate exasperation in his eyes, grabbing his shoulders and shaking him a little as if it would help him read his mind.
Chongyun rolled his eyes at Xingqiu’s antics. “Xingqiu, I can’t know if you don’t tell me how—”

Nevertheless, she accepts him. Eventually, she requests him to be reassigned as her assistant, to his total bewilderment. The start of his assistantship is the start of him realizing there may have been more to those "cruel words" than he thought.
This is how Młynar Nearl slowly, slowly falls in love with the doctor, as well as how he is eventually pushed into actually going for her. I'm sorry I'm bad at descriptions. Please refer to the tags to know what you're getting into.
