Okay, that notion might be off the table. But it was still the middle of nowhere and that seemed best at this moment. Besides, farmers and country folk lived simple lives. Right?
And Danny could use a lot of anything the exact and direct opposite of complicated at this time.

Danny Fenton stares.
Vlad Masters is happily married to his wife Maddie. A wife who looks rather lovingly at him. The man loves his dairy farm production and on site creamery, he'll share his amazing cheese. There might be the matter of his childhood friend, Jack, he frets about. Which has him and Maddie keeping up from college in making equipment related to ghosts. Definitely something there in Vlad's troubled foster kid past, that he's actually kinda open about. But, overall, this proto-portal accident free Vlad Masters seems to have a good life and is a decent kind of guy. Not a fruitloop.
It's weird. Too weird. Not right. He has to fix it.
But it's a side and version of Vlad Danny doesn't hate. And maybe...likes?

Summary
Despite being unaware of Danny's ghostly form and ghostly activities, his big sister had stepped up to support him. Well, support the ghost Phantom in protecting Amity Park from ghosts causing havoc and trouble. Jazz created and led an entire club to assist Phantom. Which was much appreciated as of late from Danny. Ghost activity was up. By a lot. Ghost animals, sure, not the worst or strongest, but still troublesome. Especially in mass like this.
Suddenly Danny's arch-nemesis, Vlad, shows up. Ghosts come bursting through the portal into Amity Park. On the run from a bigger and badder ghost. Scrambling and panicked, Danny knows he needs to deal with the bigger problem. His responsibility. Ghosts.
Yet, for Danny, the bigger problem is his supportive sister not there to assist and back him up. Jazz would never not be there for him. Something clearly has happened. What happened? Where is she? Who knows something about it? Vlad? Her friends? Boyfriend? Club members? Is there a connection to the increased ghosts? Jazz isn't supposed to be the one in trouble. That was Danny. Jazz was supposed to always, if annoyingly, be there as his overbearing big sister.
So.

It starts like this: Danny breaks into Vlad's Amity Park house, looking for Ellie. He walks into a murder.
It starts like this: Val breaks into Vlad's Amity Park house looking for answers. She walks into a murder.
It continues like this: Danny's falling apart, guilt and grief eating him up. Having to fight ghosts so often isn't helping.
It continues like this: Val has too many questions and conflicting feelings. Finding Phantom fighting nothing isn't helping.
It ends like this: Danny's falling, and there's no one to catch him.
It ends like this: Val's racing gravity, and there's no time.

Summary
Danny would like to say for the record that it was not his fault.
In fact, Danny would say that it was entirely Clockwork's fault. After all, he wouldn't even be in this situation if it wasn't for that cryptic time god.
But what was his fault was the fact that he kept helping.
He kept taking the cash from the assholes (and damn there were a lot of assholes near where he lived) messing with the residents who lived in the area. He kept accepting their offers of food. So because of this new routine that kept him able to afford to rent out his shitty (and possibly illegal) apartment and the hunger pangs sufficiently satisfied, rumors grew.
tldr; after Clockwork dropped of Danny in Gotham he tries to make the best out of the situation which includes helping out some people. Except along the way that led to rumors that he was an up-and-coming crime boss. A rumor he was largely unaware of.

Danny takes on a new moniker when he starts up business in Gotham as a human, but this time, he's not the hero. A vigilante to the core, taking risks and shots for the greater good at another's expense.
With his memories holding his left hand and his responsibilities holding his right, Gotham seems like the perfect place to hide.
Until he's got a clock over his head, ticking away to an unknown end.
i.e. Danny steals from the waynes and now have the bats on his tail, too bad for them the only one to have spotted Danny is the Red Hood himself. Maybe the halfa can trust the resident crime lord with his teeny tiny issue with the government. What's a little treason to murder, right?
