He comes to the gradual, horrific realisation that the joyous sounds are emanating from Rody’s apartment. His lover’s door looks right back at him, just as dumbfounded as he is. Out front, he’s isolated in the stairwell.
Rody didn’t know he was coming today. A bitter lump rises in his chest as he hears more laughter, mocking in its warmth. A woman’s voice, entangled with Rody’s in a shared tone too intimate for comfort.

[“Are you laughing?”
“No, of course not,” Vince replied, kindly moving his hand away to keep the smoke out of Rody’s space. There was still a ghost of a smile in his eyes, and it was different than anything Rody had seen on his face before. Sure, he was still amused at him instead of with him, but it was weirdly softer. Like maybe the fondness wasn’t one-sided. Rody, against his will, felt his lips quirking up too, and Vince’s eyes seemed to follow the movement. Then, he took another drag, leaving Rody to keep his distance—though he couldn’t help but watch him.
“Jerk,” Rody mumbled, and Vince’s usual, familiar smirk was back.]
Rody has been getting closer with Vince.
