In the end, he decides to deal with Eskel first—his boots are new and sturdy, he trusts that they’ll be able to handle a bit of glass. Eskel doesn’t seem to notice him until the glass shards crunch underneath his boot, and then—“D-Daddy?” The sheer amount of hope in Eskel’s voice is almost as devastating as the way he crumbles in on himself when he realizes just who it is that’s standing there, “Y-You’re not… You’re not Daddy.”
“Eskel…” Vesemir keeps his tone soft and even as he approaches the young Witcher, “Do you know who I am, Eskel?” He asks.
Eskel blinks up at him with wide, tear-filled bluish-amber eyes, before offering a hesitant nod. “Y-You’re Grandpa Vesemir.”
He says, in a small, broken voice. He tries to stick his thumb into his mouth, only to remember at the last minute that his hand is still bleeding. “I… I-I have an owie. Can you fix?”--
AKA, Geralt has been so preoccupied with Ciri's training that he's been neglecting Eskel. Eskel takes this to mean Geralt doesn't want him anymore, and this causes him to slip into his little headspace.
