“I can’t take back what you’ve seen or what I’ve done,” he’s staring at his hands, his thumb running circles over her skin, “I can’t change who I am Pen or the family I was born into. I can’t run from this.” His eyes meet hers and there’s something there, a reflection of the boy she fell stupidly and childishly in love with.
Penelope holds his gaze steady, unwavering, even when her heart breaks. The rope around her neck growing tighter with every breath. If he knew what she was planning, the pile of lies she’s told him, he wouldn’t be looking at her the way that he was now.
Colin cups the side of her face tenderly. Without sparing a single thought she leans into it, enjoying the warmth the palm of his hand provides. Maybe if things had transpired differently, they would have had a chance. Maybe if she could turn her heart a little colder, maybe if she could see the world from their perspective, maybe then she’d be willing to walk the fires of hell for him.
“I can’t change any of it, but I can keep you safe. I meant what I said earlier Penelope. Let us keep you safe,” he leans his forehead against hers. “I have to go now but I’ll be back later, okay?”
“Okay.”

“Why do you wear those things if you hate it so much?” he asked her as soon as she started to take off her bra. “And how on earth are you able to take it off without taking off your shirt first?”
He looked truly curious, and as usual, was trying and failing not to look at her chest. At this point she was used to his gaze on her body, but it still made her blush a little bit.
“Well, it’s a skill every woman develops, because we all hate wearing this thing”, she answered him, shaking the piece of clothing in his direction, then dropping it in a chair near her, and walking to the kitchen to wash her hands.
