The man shrugs, taking a drag. “You.”
He lets out a laugh. Jake frowns at the vitriol in his voice and Rooster lets out a sigh. “You have me. I’ve never said no to you in your life, Jake. You’re the one who won’t tell me what this,” he gestures at the empty space between them, “is. And as long as I don’t know, I can’t do this anymore.”
“I want this to be real.”
“It’s always been real to me, Jake,” Rooster admits. “You’re the one always pushing back.”

Jake’s mouth has gotten him out of a lot of trouble over his years in the Navy; more than one CO’s been warned that he has a silver tongue and has fallen prey to it anyway, something about which Jake is extremely proud. It’s undeniable, though, that his mouth has gotten him into trouble just as frequently.
