Summary
Eddie looks at him, this radiant boy in front of him. Steve’s soft hair is riddled with snowflakes just like his skin is dotted with moles, a constellation of stars that Eddie wants nothing more than to map. His smile is bright and his cheeks are rosy, proof of life and warmth and joy. The surrounding snowfall almost glitters as it reflects the light, illuminating Steve all the better.
I’m in love with you, Eddie thinks, and he finds that it feels right to think so. Maybe soon, he’ll have the courage to say it.
----
Or, thanks to some sport event tickets from Wayne, Eddie and Steve find themselves spending some alone time together before Christmas.

Summary
She thinks, sometimes, about just asking him. She and Joel talk about pretty much anything between them. Hell, he even talked her down through the bathroom door when she got her first period after arriving back in Jackson and was convinced she was dying because there was so much blood. A man who can talk about uterine lining and cycles and heavy flows without being a little bitch about it is a man who can talk about almost anything.
And yet, every single time she starts to open her mouth, she just hears his voice from the one time he did tell her exactly what they are.
Or well, what they aren’t.
You aren’t my daughter, and I sure as hell ain’t your dad.
In the end, well.
It doesn’t get much simpler than that.
(after settling in jackson, ellie doesn't know what she and joel are) (ft. short ellie, protective joel, and feels)

Summary
“No,” he says, when four Fireflies as a unit manage to restrain him, pushing him to his knees on the floor.
“She’s gone,” a nurse says in a voice that might be gentle if she wasn’t delivering his worst nightmare right to him.
“No,” he says at once, the word nearly punched out of him. “No she’s not. Ellie, wake up.”
“Joel-” It’s Anderson speaking to him, he realizes distantly. He doesn’t really give a fuck. The man is lying to him, trying to say that his kid is dead.
“Ellie Williams, you wake up right now,” he orders. She likes her jokes, but this is going too fucking far. “It’s not funny. Now you wake up.”
It doesn’t matter how many commands he gives her, though.
Or how many pleas when the weight of what just happened starts to press in on him.
The only response he gets is that piercing, damning alarm.
(trying to get joel out of the way, the fireflies fake ellie's death) (...it doesn't end well for them)

Summary
She thinks it’s a joke at first when she finds out that Joel’s a patroller, too. She’s a veteran, so it was a simple thing for her to be assigned to the work as well, but the idea of gentle, loving Joel with a gun in hand, fighting and killing, is almost laughably absurd.
She doesn’t know how anyone could look at the man who spends hours on the porch with his daughter patiently teaching her guitar and think “yes, he’s good in a fight.” She doesn’t know how anyone could look at the man who regularly scoops up his fussy nephew and soothes him with an experienced parent’s deftness and think “yes, he’ll absolutely kill without hesitation.” She doesn’t know how anyone could look at the man who lets his teenager manhandle him to steal his food right off his plate because it makes her laugh and think “yes, he’s ruthless enough to take out a threat.”
She doesn’t know how anyone could look at Joel Miller and think he’d be a good patroller, and day by day, she worries about it more and more.
(a newcomer to jackson meets joel and thinks he's FAR too soft to be a patroller) (ft. outside pov of joel being a somft girldad) (and somft, period)
