Summary
Kokaku had known it was a trap the second they walked into the room.
The air was too still, the silence too loud. It was clearly an ambush, one that Madara didn’t seem to recognize, instead barging forward like usual, pistol at the ready.
Kohaku should’ve stopped him.
He should’ve done something, instead of watched as Madara leaned back against the darkened plaster wall, his gaze meeting Kohaku’s in a single, electrified moment that made dread pool in the boy’s stomach.
He should’ve gone first.
But now, it was too late.
The BANG! still echoed in his ears, the blood speckling his face and soaking into his black clothes warm against his skin. Madara’s silence as he collapsed to the ground, not even uttering a cry of pain as he crashed into the linoleum floor, blood already leaking out around the bullet hole in his gut. Kohaku’s own scream had replaced Madara’s, a scream that he should have trained himself to suppress. But no, in a moment of panic, the cry had slipped out, leaving him scrambling to close the short distance between them, grabbing onto Madara’s coat and shaking him roughly.
“MADARA-HAN!”
Tl;DR: Mama gets shot and Kohaku finally breaks.

“Happy birthday to me…”
It was depressing how silent the room was.
The clock blinked 11:47, reminding him that he had only a few minutes left.
“Happy birthday, dear Mama… Happy birthday to you.”
Lightly blowing out the candle, he sat in silence, slumped over the table as he watched smoke curl up in the stuffy air.
He couldn’t help but remember all the times he’d gathered with his friends, singing loudly and boisterously along with the crowd for their birthdays. He couldn’t stop his heart from aching, just thinking about the Happy Birthday Mikejimama!!!!!!!! he’d gotten that morning, the only message on an otherwise barren lock screen.
Being alone on a day like this made his heart feel heavy.

Summary
The first few notes played.
Mika found himself moving, matching Shu’s distant movements, a dance so perfect that they were one. His voice filled the silence, soft and gentle against the rough grate of Shu’s impassioned singing in his mind, the hurried music filling his ears and drowning out the scream of his body against the flurry of movement.
He danced. Danced before the audience, vision blurring around the edges, world beginning to filter out into a muffled and distant lullaby-
Mika stumbled, suddenly feeling sick to his stomach, blinking against the harsh lights in his face, illuminating them as the ground came nearer and nearer- The shine directly in his eyes disoriented him, his ankle twisting as he struggled to balance, the world spinning so fast that he couldn’t hold back the shrill croak of pain as he reached for a support that wasn’t there. He couldn’t see, couldn’t hear, his cue coming and going as Shu glanced over in alarm-
He was falling. He missed the stage’s column, his hand falling against the air as he pitched sideways.
In a brilliant moment of clarity, all he could see was Shu’s eyes.
TL;DR: Shu drives Mika to the brink with exhaustion and reaps the consequences.

Summary
The horrifying moment replayed in Shu’s head, over and over. It replayed so many times that Shu couldn’t think about anything else, his waking hours consumed by the wash of sickening humiliation that had crashed over him, the foreboding dread as he realized that his reign was over. Tenshouin had thoroughly and completely won the king’s gambit, crushing Valkyrie beneath his heel as if they meant nothing. His meddling with the performance had torn Shu from his seat at the top, casting him down and driving away his one and only doll, the only one that could follow the yanking of its strings with perfect grace.
And yet… Kagehira hadn’t left.
The invisible and defective one had stayed by his side, even if Shu’s own strings were cut.
TL;DR: Shu takes Valkyrie's loss hard. Mika is there to keep him going... even if he's barely holding on himself.
